The Seventh framework programme of the European Commission (2007-2013) includes some important changes, including the allocation of a specific budget for basic research, the IDEAS programme (€ 1.06 billion euro/year) and funding dedicated to the preparation and construction of the European research infrastructures included in the roadmap of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI).
One particularly important aspect of FP7 is the creation of the European Research Area (ERA) which will involve the construction of new infrastructures and upgrading of existing ones. To that end, the European Commission has set up a new European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC). As a key player in the construction of the ERA, the INFN is actively involved in and promotes numerous research infrastructure projects.
The INFN has successfully responded to calls for proposals under all the FP7 programmes . In particular, these regard: i) research infrastructure programmes, in which the INFN has developed significant competence and expertise in e-infrastructures drawing on many years of experience in data intensive distributed computing technology (Grid computing); ii) the IDEAS and Marie Curie programmes dedicated to young researchers.
