“The Big Data Society. What Quantum, supercomputing and AI can and cannot do for science” was the theme of the 11th edition of the school of journalism and science communication set up by INFN and Nature Italy. This event was held in Erice, in the historic headquarters of the Fondazione Ettore Majorana, from 8 to 10 October. Artificial intelligence, supercomputing, and quantum computing are fields of research and technological development that are crucial for the society of the future, which will be increasingly distinguished by the production of enormous quantities of data. They are also topics at the centre of scientific and cultural debate and, for this reason, were chosen by the School of communication and scientific journalism of Erice for the 2023 edition. The school reopened in person and XX scholarship holders coming from all over Europe and beyond participated in it. Funded by INFN, the school offers scholarships for young journalists and scientific communicators from throughout the world every year. They have the chance to follow courses that each year are dedicated to developing a different theme of current scientific and journalistic interest, alternating between lectures and laboratories held by experts from the world of science, journalism, and science communication. This edition inaugurated the collaboration between INFN and Nature Italy, the digital magazine dedicated to research in Italy and to the Italian scientific community published by Nature Portfolio.
