After the nomination to the presidency of the INFN National Institute of Nuclear Physics, by the Board of Directors of INFN during the session of May 30, from today, July 1, with decree of appointment of MIUR Ministry of Education University and Research , Antonio Zoccoli takes office as President of the INFN, succeeding Fernando Ferroni, who has presided over the Institute since 2011 for two terms. Antonio Zoccoli, born in Bologna in 1961, graduated in physics from the University of Bologna, where today he is a full professor of experimental physics. Associate researcher of the INFN Section of Bologna, of which he was Director from 2006 to 2011, from 2011 he is a member of the Executive Board of the INFN, of which he was also vice president. Throughout his scientific career, he has always been active in the experimental field of fundamental, nuclear and subnuclear physics. He was first a member of the Muon Catalysed Fusion collaborations at Rutherforf Lab (UK) and OBELIX at CERN in Geneva, then he participated in the HERA-B experiment at the DESY laboratory in Hamburg, and since 2005 he is a member of the ATLAS collaboration at CERN which, together to the CMS collaboration, he announced the first observation of the Higgs boson in July 2012. Zoccoli is co-author of more than 700 scientific and technical publications in international journals. Since 2008 he has presided over the Giuseppe Occhialini Foundation for the dissemination of the culture of physics.
