In January, following an agreement between INFN and the Agency for Territorial Cohesion, the project INFN.Open (Open INnovation from Fundamental Nuclear research) was launched. The objective of the project, funded with approximately 1.7 million euros under the Cohesion Action Programme Complementary to the PON "Governance and Institutional Capacity" 2014-2020, is to put the scientific and technological knowledge generated by INFN within its own basic research process at the service of society. The INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratories (LNGS) will be the national coordinating hub of INFN.Open, demonstrating the leading role of the laboratory in the field dedicated to development and technology transfer.
Through specific activities aimed at establishing contacts with companies and with the local area, the project will optimise the management of technology transfer processes to companies by promoting the exploitation of skills available in the Institute.
In its research activities, INFN has the ability to develop tools and equipment with a high technological content. The innovation generated by the scientific research of the Institute can produce an important impact on civil and industrial society by providing skills, infrastructure and technologies that the institute has developed in various sectors such as health, environment, cultural heritage, security and aerospace, but also innovative technologies for next-generation supercomputing. For this reason, in recent years INFN has been actively involved in technology transfer, setting up a unit dedicated to the exploitation and marketing of innovations produced by the Institute, as demonstrated by the INFN.Open project.
